Am I Getting Fat or Pregnant? [Answered by Dr. Bisma]

Pregnancy or Fatty Belly? Let's find it out!

Getting pregnant after settling down is what the majority of couples wish for. However, some couples believe otherwise. Despite your wishes, pregnancies happen if you are sexually active.

Whether you are trying to conceive, or you are in the middle of a pregnancy scare. Your train of thought is rushing, and you are overwhelmed because you have noticed a bunch of changes in your body.

However, it is not necessary you are pregnant if your favorite pairs of jeans do not fit you anymore, you could just be gaining weight. Or it is possibly vice versa. Perhaps you have some gastrointestinal issues causing some long-term bloating. Or maybe it is your body reacting to stress or your new birth pills.

How to figure out if you got just fat or Pregnant?

I am here to guide you through every step, but first, you need to relax. Whatever the symptoms you feel or see, allow me to help you clear your confusion of if you are getting fat or pregnant. Below are a few signs that you need to analyze to figure out if your symptoms fall under pregnancy or a simple weight gain.

Indication #1: Missed Period

The very first and the most straightforward sign of pregnancy is a missed period. A missed period indicated that you have successfully conceived during your fertile window i.e., ovulation days.

However, everyone has a different menstrual cycle. If your cycle is regular, then being at least 10 days late is completely normal. Though, if you have an irregular cycle or Polycystic ovary syndrome then you often do miss your monthly periods. If you recently started birth control or new birth control, then you might miss your due period.

But if you need to be sure if you have conceived or not then you will need to wait at least two weeks to take a pregnancy test for any confirmation.

You might want to look out for implantation bleeding, commonly known as light vaginal bleeding, that occurs around the time of your due period. Most women often mistake it for their periods.

Indication #2: Throwing up your guts

Nausea, also known as morning sickness in the pregnancy dictionary, is another common symptom of pregnancy. This symptom starts as soon as two to eight weeks after conceiving. About 80% of women experience nausea and vomiting during their nine months of pregnancy.

However, do not let the name “morning sickness” deceive you. Morning sickness occurs at any time of the day.

Though a common symptom of pregnancy, it is also a common sign of weight gain or any underlying health issue. So, if you have been puking your guts out excessively, it is best to contact your doctor.

Indication #3: Many, many, many washroom trips

Your trips to the washroom are very frequent now. You are drinking a lot of liquids, but it feels like you are taking many rounds of the washroom. Peeing excessively is another symptom of pregnancy. However, this could also be an underlying bladder problem.

Or if you are suffering from extreme constipation then this could either be pregnancy or weight gain. Progesterone is a pregnancy hormone that slows down bowel movements, hence causing constipation. Though just like excessive peeing could be a bladder problem, constipation could be from some bad food you ate. Most of the times constipation is also accompanied by bloating.

Indication #4: Multiple Aches

Headaches, backaches, and even dizziness or fatigue are pregnancy symptoms. The sudden changes in hormones cause headaches and pain in the lower back is very common among pregnant women. Fatigue and dizziness are felt as your blood vessels dilate which causes your blood pressure to drop.

It is best to mention that if either headaches, backaches, dizziness, and fatigue are accompanied by vomiting, there is a big chance you could be pregnant but there are also a few changes that you ate something wrong or you are sick or super stressed.

Indication #5: Changes in your breasts

Another early pregnancy symptoms are the changes in your breasts. The skin around your nipples gets darker in you have successfully conceived. Moreover, you will also feel breast tenderness as early as 1 to 2 weeks after you have conceived. This is because the hormones in your body are preparing for milk production. Some women also experience milky nipple discharge as early milk production.

Indication #6: Weight gain factors

All the symptoms listed above are common indicators of pregnancy. However, to be 100% sure if you are pregnant or not, a visit to the OB/GYN or a pregnancy test will confirm.

Usually, a pregnancy bump takes three to four months to show. Though if you notice that your waistline is getting wider then, other possible causes could be:

  • You have been stressed out a lot lately.
  • You have changed your eating habits.
  • You might be consuming a lot of food recently.
  • You might have bowel issues that cause bloating.
  • Fluctuations in hormones result in weight gain often.
  • You might have ovarian cancer. It often results in weight gain.

If you are concerned that you are getting fat, you should visit your regular doctor to rule out any serious health issues and to get diagnosed accurately.

What are the odds of Conveiving?

If one is sexually active, there is always a chance of pregnancy. If the person does not plan on getting pregnant any time soon then it is best to take more than one contraceptive to minimize the chances of conceiving. Although there are options available if you have an unplanned pregnancy. So do not worry!

If you planned on getting pregnant and your symptoms fall under the pregnancy symptoms, then congratulations on conceiving! Though I would suggest it is best to re-confirm with a pregnancy test as they are 99.99% accurate or visit your OB/GYN. If you were hoping your symptoms would side with a weight gain and they did then I am happy for you.

Remember, these symptoms could be symptoms of any underlying health condition so if for best you contact a professional health care worker or an OB/GYN before the symptoms get worse.
