Lithuania, the home to the very first higher educational institution in Europe is one of the most hotshot study destinations in Europe. Its teaching methods are contemporary, universities are cheap, architecture is mind-blowing and the quality of life is higher. There are many English language programs available to choose from, although the primary language of instruction in most schools is still Lithuanian.

IELTS Requirement in Lithuanian Universities for admissions:

A number of schools in Lithuania have surfaced with their English language programs to cater to the needs of international students. Those international students whose first language is English are not required to prove their language proficiency. However, the other students will be checked for their English language proficiency through an interview. IELTS, TOEFL, and other language tests are neither required to take admission in Lithuanian universities nor are these tests the requirement for securing a student visa.

Finest Schools of Lithuania:

The Lithuanian universities and colleges are some of the finest in the world with three Lithuanian universities in the QS World University rankings, namely, Vytautas Magnus University (VMU), Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU), and Vilnius University (VU). There are some other schools as well which are highly sought after in the international students’ community, like ISM University of Management and Economics and European Humanities University. 

Working as a Student in Lithuania:

Students from outside of the EU have to go to the Labor Exchange of Lithuania to secure a part-time work permit which will let them work for up to 20 hours a week. Currently, there is a high demand for English language instructors in Lithuania. If you are a student there, you should definitely look into that. The minimum salary for an hour is 3.7 EUR.

Living Expenses in Lithuania:

Living in Lithuania is not all that expensive. A student can live off 520 EUR a month (rent exclusive). The rent expense is somewhere between 300 to 600 EUR. The cost of rent is higher in the downtown and lower in the outskirts of the cities.

2022 Scholarships in Lithuania:

As we discussed, Lithuania is a cheap country to live in. Higher education is not all that expensive either. To top it all off, there are generous scholarships available as well which are merit cum need basis. These scholarships provide financial support to meritorious and financially underprivileged students. Let’s take a look at them.

  • Kaunas University of Technology Awards:

Open just for international students, these awards are available at the under and postgraduate levels of study. The scholarship is fully-funded and is available to meritorious students. Students from various subject areas can apply. There are some other scholarships available as well which are partially-funded. These scholarships either give a tuition fee waiver or offer a monthly stipend to cover living expenses. It is open to students of certain nationalities.

  • Vilnius University Scholarships:

These scholarships are only for students from outside of the EU or EEA. Students can be from any subject area so long as they are enrolled in a full-time master’s at the Vilnius University. This university is the largest and the most prestigious university in Lithuania and uses English and Russian as its mediums of instruction. The scholarship offers a full tuition fee waiver. Applicants who are already receiving some other scholarship or aid are not eligible to apply for this scholarship program. 

  • Vytautas Magnus University Awards:

The VMU of Lithuania, in the form of tuition fee waivers (partial), is giving out scholarships to international students. Both master’s and bachelor’s level students can apply. Students must be enrolled in an English-taught program. They will be assessed for their language proficiency via some tests that are designed by the university. Students do not have to submit scores of IELTS or TOEFL.

  • Government of Lithuania Scholarships:

The government of Lithuania is keen on attracting foreign students into its higher educational institutions. For that precise reason, it is offering about 70 scholarships to international students who are enrolled in a master’s program in Lithuanian universities. The scholarship is worth 380 EUR per month. 

International students from Belarus, Georgia, and Ukraine will be given a fully-funded scholarship if they are studying creative design, arts, physical, biomedical, or technological sciences. 

40 of these scholarships are for students from Ukraine. Students should have an excellent academic record as well as fluency over the language in which they are being taught. 

  • Scholarships by Lithuanian Foundation:

The main object of these scholarships is to preserve Lithuanian culture and heritage. Students from Lithuania and the USA are eligible for these scholarships. Students should be pursuing a bachelor’s or a master’s degree in any one of the following subject areas. 

      1. Literature
      2. Linguistics
      3. Folklore
      4. Literature

The scholarship is worth 5,000 USD a year. It is renewable for subsequent years. The students getting the scholarship for the first year will have to re-apply the next year.
