Here are four things you need to know or do before starting your skincare routine:
#1 Identify Your Skin Type
There are four types of skin: oily, dry, normal and combination.
Knowing your skin type can help you to set your skincare routine that suits your skin’s specific desires. Each skin type has its own set of pros and cons and skincare routine.
#2 Adding New Products to Your Skincare Regimen
The most important thing while introducing new products into your skincare routine is “one product at one time”. That means if you try a new cleanser you won’t start using a new moisturizer without giving the cleanser a test run for a couple of weeks otherwise you will have no idea which product is causing trouble to your skincare routine.
#3 Eating Healthy Skincare Diet
Proper nutrition and a healthy diet is the foundation of a healthy skincare routine!
The best skin care products in the world are not a replacement for a shoddy diet. Your body needs the nutrients and vitamins that build up the perfect skin you’re looking for. Just by changing your diet, your skin care regimen can do wonders. Drinking plenty of water and eating less oily food with lots of detox drinks and green veggies fruits is the basic idea to achieve healthy skin.
Putting Together an Effective Skincare Routine
Now that we set the foundation, we’re ready to discuss the individual steps of a basic skincare regimen. Remember to follow skincare regimen twice a day in the AM and PM (morning and night). The basic steps of a skincare regimen to achieve healthy skin are:
- Exfoliate (Optional)
- Spot Treat (Optional)
- Sunscreen (Optional if your moisturizer already has SPF protection)
Step 1: Cleanse
Cleansing is the most important part of your skincare regimen. The whole point of using a cleanser is to get your skin to a clean slate. Cleansing can filter out your pores by removing slime, excess oil, and leftover product that gets left behind and stuck in between them. Every skin type should be cleaned at least once a day, preferably in the PM. Oily skin needs more cleansing than dry skin. For cleansing Gel and Cream-based cleansers are much gentler as they often don’t contain these ingredients. Soap cannot be considered as a cleanser; well technically it does but not an effective one. It destroys your skin’s lipid barrier (its natural defense against environmental toxins) and encourages acne-causing bacteria to thrive.
Step 2: Exfoliate
Exfoliation is included in optional steps for women skincare regimen because it is not necessary to exfoliate every day. Exfoliation is of two types — chemical and physical. The basic principle is to remove the outer and older layers of skin and reveal the younger skin hidden underneath.
Our skin naturally sheds skin cells each day and exfoliators speed up the process, eventually turning dull-looking skin into radiant-looking skin by unclogging pores, improving skin tone, and fighting against acne. Exfoliation will also make you look younger over time if used consistently.
Let’s look at the pros and cons of chemical and physical exfoliation
Chemical exfoliation can be further broken down into two types:
• AHAs (short for Alpha Hydroxy Acids)
• BHAs (short for Beta Hydroxy Acids)
AHAs exfoliate by working on the surface of your skin. In contrast, BHAs work the surface as well as underneath. The reason for this is AHAs dissolve in water whereas BHAs dissolve in oil. This means BHAs can get through sebum (the proper term for the oil your skin produces) and reach deeper within pores.
Physical exfoliation has many downsides which chemical doesn’t have. These downsides include damage caused to the skin by creating micro-tears that otherwise would be avoided by using chemical exfoliators, the inability to remove dead skin cells evenly, and their tendency to easily irritate sensitive skin. Physical exfoliators mostly come in the forms of scrubs, loofahs, pumice stones, and other brushes. They all use friction to remove dead skin cells.
Step 3: Spot Treatment
If you’re struggling with acne, this is the step of skincare regimen where you will directly treat pimples and other types of acne. Here are some of the most popular spot treatments:
- Benzoyl Peroxide
- Salicylic Acid (can also be used as a general exfoliator)
- Tea Tree Oil
- Neem Oil
Step 4: Moisturize
This is the most important part of steps for women skincare routine. No matter what type of skin you have (especially if your skin is showing all the signs of dehydration).
Common Symptoms of Dehydrated Skin
- Feels very dry or tight after cleansing
- Prone to whiteheads & blackheads
- No elasticity or “bounce”
- Has a lackluster and tired appearance overall
A moisturizer should always be used anytime you cleanse or exfoliate. Cleansers and exfoliators not only remove unwanted grime and sebum but also remove much-needed moisture which keeps skin healthy and glowing. Dry skin grew ages faster so it’s important to replace moisture lost to liven up your appearance.
There are three main kinds of moisturizers — occlusives, emollients, and humectants.
- Occlusives wrap the skin with a thin barrier to prevent loss of moisture.
- Emollients work by sinking into the skin improving elasticity and smoothing it out.
- Humectants work by attracting water vapor to the surface of the skin to keep it moisturized.
Moisturizers may contain a combination of these three elements.
Step 5: Sunscreen
Sunscreen is an essential component of steps for women skincare routine whether you plan on getting a tan or not. Sunscreen protects your skin from premature wrinkles, fine lines, and sunspots. All three damage your skin. Hyperpigmentation left behind from acne becomes worsen and skin eventually turns darker with sun exposure. Some moisturizers also come with SPF protection so you can combine the previous step with this one. A thin layer of sunscreen over your face should be the last step of your skincare routine. SPF 15 is suitable for everyday regular use but SPF 30+ is better depending upon the region where you are living. Make sure your skin is producing enough Vitamin D!
