The longevity of brow tint, makeup, and even permanent brow treatments depends heavily on the condition of your skin. Oily skin tends to shed pigment quickly, while dry skin is prone to irritation and flaking — both of which can have undesired effects. In this column, I will share tips on how to care for your brow area through each season.

Winter: Nourish and Protect

Cold weather depletes the skin of moisture, making it dry, sensitive, and prone to flaking — not ideal for brow treatments. To avoid irritation and improve product retention, use hydrating skincare products and apply nourishing serums to brow hairs.

Thinking about a chemical peel? It’s best to postpone this until spring. Planning for permanent brow makeup? Begin hydrating the skin at least 1–2 weeks in advance using masks and serums. On the day of the procedure, apply a lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer to the brow area.

Spring: Repair and Rebalance

Winter often leaves skin stressed and dehydrated. Come spring, flakiness and breakouts may appear, sometimes due to vitamin deficiencies. A quick lab test and a physician-recommended supplement plan might help.

Even if everything checks out medically, dull, tired skin could mean your hydration levels are off. No need to force down two liters of water a day — just stay attuned to your body and don’t ignore thirst signals.

Opt for gentle cleansers that won’t strip the skin of oils. Start using SPF during the day — UV rays are active even when the sun isn’t  blazing. If you’re getting your brows done, prep with a mild enzyme peel to remove dead skin and improve product adherence.

Summer: Shield from the Sun

Summer brings oiliness and heavy UV exposure — both of which can wreak havoc on brow treatments. Stick to lightweight, non-comedogenic skincare to avoid breakouts. Your cleansing routine should be thorough yet gentle to avoid triggering excess sebum production.

If you’re planning a permanent brow procedure, avoid direct sun exposure at least a week before. After the treatment, always use a high-protection sunscreen (SPF 50+).

Fall: Time for Treatments

With UV levels dropping and summer stress fading, fall is the perfect season for brow treatments — especially permanent makeup. Prep the skin with regular cleansing, light exfoliation, and soothing masks.

To aid recovery post-procedure, consider taking omega fatty acids and vitamin E. Maintain your skin’s microbiome with gentle cleansers, skip overly hot water, and don’t overdo exfoliation. Your lifestyle also matters — cut back on sugar, get plenty of sleep, and spend time outdoors.

Thinking About Permanent Makeup? Here’s What to Expect

Permanent brow makeup involves placing pigment into the upper layers of the skin to create a defined, lasting shape.

There are several techniques:

  • Powder Brows – A soft, shadow-like effect perfect for those who like their brow shape but want more definition.
  • Hair-Stroke Technique – Mimics individual hairs, ideal for sparse or uneven brows, or those wanting a more dramatic reshape.
  • Combination Brows – A mix of powder and hair-stroke for a fuller, yet natural look.

Your artist will consult with you beforehand — describe your ideal look in detail, or bring reference photos. They’ll sketch your brows with a special pencil and show the pigment shade before starting.

The process takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and is generally painless. If you’re sensitive, ask about numbing cream in advance — it must be applied before the procedure begins.

Post-procedure, expect slight redness and swelling for a couple of days, followed by mild scabbing. Never pick at the scabs — apply a healing ointment with panthenol instead. The color may appear intense at first but will soften and stabilize in 3–4 weeks.

A touch-up is required 4–6 weeks later to perfect shape and color. With proper care, results can last 1.5 to 2 years.

Busting Common Myths About Permanent Brows

Myth 1: It’s Forever

Unlike tattoos, permanent makeup doesn’t go deep into the skin. The pigment fades as skin regenerates — no removal is required unless you want to speed up the process with a laser.

Myth 2: It Looks Fake

Modern techniques and pigments create incredibly natural results, often more subtle than pencil or powder. Hair-stroke brows, in particular, are virtually indistinguishable from natural hairs.

Myth 3: Healing Takes Forever

Yes, full healing takes about a month, but brows look fine during this time. Redness fades quickly, and a bit of swelling is gone within a day or two. Just follow your aftercare plan: no sun, no soaking, and apply cream for 7–10 days.

Myth 4: It Damages Your Natural Brows

The needle doesn’t reach the follicle layer, so it won’t affect hair growth or cause thinning.

Myth 5: The Color Will Turn Weird

Old pigments used to shift color over time, but modern formulas fade naturally — no unexpected blue or yellow tones. Your brows will simply look a bit lighter over time.

Ultimately, the success of your brow treatment is a partnership between you and your artist. Follow seasonal skin prep, stick to post-care instructions, and your brows will stay flawless for years to come.
