Brief Description of the FTW Foundation 

The FTW (For the Women) Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women and girls through education, mentoring, and social entrepreneurship. Their mission is to provide opportunities for women and girls to transform their lives through education, mentoring, and social entrepreneurship. This also includes creating a community of Filipinas in tech that is empowered to break through career barriers.

The FTW Foundation provides funding for female students from low-income families who are pursuing careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), healthcare, and business, the fields that hold the greatest potential for economic growth in the world. The FTW Foundation also provides mentoring opportunities for these young women so that they can develop the skills necessary for success in college and beyond.

The foundation has had over 5,000 thousand applicants since its inception. They have selected 30 women per class who display any of these three exemplary traits: Versatility, Ambitiousness, and Unstoppability. The foundation started in July 2018, with their first class held in October, of the same year. 

About the Data Science Scholarship for Philippines Women 

The Insular women’s foundation data science scholarship program is seeking 30 Philippines women to take an intense 14-Saturday program tailored to educate them about data science to start their career in tech. With expert instructors in data science and analytics as mentors, applicants will learn:

• Practical statistical methods 
• Data storytelling 
• Programming in python 
• Real-life applications of commonly used algorithms 
• Presentation and communication skills

At the completion of the program, the foundation will issue a certificate in data science to all successful applicants who have completed the course. In that, 76% of their graduates have gotten jobs in data science and have received not less than a 154% increment in their average monthly salary. Experts and professionals in data science and analytics are the instructors or mentors for the training.

NOTE: This scholarship opportunity for Filipinas does not involve the disbursement of stipends or allowances. Also, scholars are required to have a laptop and reliable internet access to partake in the program. 

Training materials in the form of presentations and software tools will be provided. Since these materials are the property of the FTW Foundation, scholars will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement before sharing the materials. 

Eligibility Criteria for the FTW Foundation Data Science Scholarship for Philippines Women

The following categories are eligible to apply for the scholarship:

• Filipinas with aptitude and attitude to learning data science 
• Filipinas with or without prior education
• Only those with interests in math and statistics with the zeal to learn is all that is needed
• Those with or without prior relevant work experience 
• Some knowledge of statistical data, analysis, visualization, and programming will help you train faster. (this is just preferred not compulsory)
• There is no age limit
• There is no obligation of employment to accept the scholarship

Important Dates in the Scholarship

• 10th of September 2022- the launching of the insular foundation FTW Foundation data science scholarship for the year (which is the 7th batch since inception)
• 13th of October 2022- the last application
• 29th of October 2022- interview and workshop
• 3rd of November 2022- application results of the batch 
• 13th of November 2022- the start of the training for the insular FTW foundation data science scholarship

Assessment Process

The assessment is two phases, the application form phase (which takes about 15 minutes) and the technical assessment phase (which lasts up to an hour). Each part can be done at different times. At the end of each part, you can immediately proceed or wait to be sent a mail with instructions for the next phase of the application. 

Nevertheless, it is better to complete each part of the application as soon as possible, to improve your chances of securing a slot in the scholarship program. Whether you wait for the sessional email or proceed, the email will be sent to you. The final results of the application will be announced on or before the 3rd of November 2022.  

Schedule of the FTW Foundation Data Science Scholarship for Philippines Women

Classes are held every Saturday for the 14-day span between 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. 100% attendance is enjoined for every scholarship recipient. Absence due to medical reasons should be justified with proper documentation. Thousands of applications are yearly received, so recipients should demonstrate commitment to utilizing the full scale of the opportunity. 

A portion of the training is conducted face-to-face at a specified location in Makati City, while some classes will be virtual on zoom. Attendance is mandatory for physical and virtual classes and unexcused absences may result in termination of the scholarship. 

What Next After the Training?

After the training, the FTW foundation data science scholarship committee will present a certificate to scholars who have completed the course requirements. The certificate can be used to demonstrate a shift into a data science career. The FTW foundation also uses the strength of their partners to transition into a dream career. 

After the training, scholars can pursue careers in the following roles:

• Jr Data Scientist
• Data Engineer 
• Data Analyst
